{"id":1588,"date":"2018-05-13T00:59:36","date_gmt":"2018-05-13T00:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1588"},"modified":"2018-06-03T23:17:45","modified_gmt":"2018-06-03T23:17:45","slug":"sermon-may-13-2018-the-need-for-deliverance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-may-13-2018-the-need-for-deliverance\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon &#8211; May 13, 2018: &#8220;The Need for Deliverance&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1588-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/may13-18.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/may13-18.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/may13-18.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<h3><em>The Need for Deliverance<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Luke 17:11-19<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Parallel Accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No parallel accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Unique to the Gospel of Luke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke\u2019s reason for recording<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Literary device used to transition: this is the final leg of Jesus\u2019 journey to Jerusalem.<\/li>\n<li>The event reinforces the theme that salvation is for all humanity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The lesson<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is not so much about gratitude for what Jesus has done (though important).<\/li>\n<li>Has more to do with Jesus\u2019s ability to set humanity free from their spiritual condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Master<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luke uses <em>epistasas<\/em> instead of rabbi.<\/li>\n<li>It conveys Luke\u2019s understanding of who Jesus is.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus is master over both physical and spiritual realms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Leper<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hebrew word is<\/li>\n<li>Comes from an Arabic word that means to \u201cstrike down\u201d or \u201cscourge.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>It can be applied to both a skin condition and mold\/mildew.<\/li>\n<li>If persistent it can make a person and object unclean.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone found unclean could no longer participate in communal functions and religious rituals.<\/li>\n<li><em>Tzaraat<\/em> was believed to be a punishment of God for sin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mercy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not just a feeling of compassion but a desire to do something about one\u2019s condition.<\/li>\n<li>The nine seem to be seeking deliverance from their physical condition.<\/li>\n<li>The Samaritan seems to be seeking deliverance from his spiritual condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deliverance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus commends the faith of the Samaritan saying \u201cyour faith has made you well.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>This would seem to imply that the healing was the result of faith.<\/li>\n<li>However\u2026.<\/li>\n<li><em>Se ho pistis sozo se <\/em>= \u201cyour faith has made you well\u201d (ESV)<\/li>\n<li><em>Sozo <\/em>means to be delivered from imprisonment or affliction.<\/li>\n<li><em>Se ho pistis sozo se <\/em>is found at the end of a story in Luke 7 (36-47) and is translated \u201cYour faith has saved you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What about our deliverance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our natural tendency in seeking God\u2019s mercy is a desire to be delivered from our external circumstance.<\/li>\n<li>However, is our external circumstance a result of sin?<\/li>\n<li>Jesus\u2019s main concern is our deliverance from sin: repentance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transformation Expectation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God expects us to own up to our sin: We may be forgiven, but we still need to repent when we sin.<\/li>\n<li>Stand firm on God\u2019s promise: \u201cAll things work together for good\u201d (Rom 8:28).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Seek God\u2019s strength to repent and then trust God to bring about good from an evil circumstance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Need for Deliverance Luke 17:11-19 Parallel Accounts No parallel accounts.
