{"id":1524,"date":"2018-03-18T00:39:02","date_gmt":"2018-03-18T00:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1524"},"modified":"2018-03-27T00:41:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-27T00:41:00","slug":"sermon-march-18-2018-the-rich-man-lazarus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-march-18-2018-the-rich-man-lazarus\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon &#8211; March 18, 2018: &#8220;The Rich Man &#038; Lazarus&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1524-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/mar18-18.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/mar18-18.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/mar18-18.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<h2>Luke 16:19-31<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Parallel Accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No parallel accounts<\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem.<\/li>\n<li>In this section Jesus has been very critical of the Pharisees and once again uses a parable to convey the idea that they are not as in a secure position as they think.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Luke\u2019s reason for recording<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is not a teaching about heaven and hell.<\/li>\n<li>The parable unmasks the misconception of how one enters into heaven and reinforces the importance of faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>First Century Cosmology<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus spoke parables that used familiar concepts and ideas.<\/li>\n<li>In this parable Jesus uses first century cosmology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Uniqueness of the Parable<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is the only recorded parable where Jesus uses a proper name.<\/li>\n<li>The claim: the parable is an actual account, so Jesus is revealing the real nature of Hades and\/or heaven and hell.<\/li>\n<li>However\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>The existence of only one of these parables doesn\u2019t exclude the fact that Jesus may have used others.<\/li>\n<li>The name Lazarus has meaning and significance that would not have gone unnoticed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Possible reasons for using Lazarus<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The name means \u201cGod has helped\u201d and conveys the idea that God does in deed help the poor, sick and weak (people whom the Pharisees rejected).<\/li>\n<li>Eliezer was the servant of Abraham and therefore may suggest that the people whom the Pharisees saw as lost causes could become heirs of the Kingdom over \u201cthe children of Abraham\u201d or those who believed themselves secure because of position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What the parable teaches<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heaven\n<ul>\n<li>Faith (trust, belief, dependence) and relationship with God is the key to heaven.<\/li>\n<li>Without this there is no other position a person can be in that will get them into heaven.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Blessing:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBlessing\u201d is not a relative term nor is it in the eye of the beholder.<\/li>\n<li>God determines blessing.<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s blessing may look more like a curse from a worldly standpoint.<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s blessing always draws people closer to him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The heart of a true servant:\n<ul>\n<li>True servants of God cannot ignore the plight of man.<\/li>\n<li>True servants are to act when and where they can with what they have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s revelation\n<ul>\n<li>God has made sufficient communication with the world concerning his love and provision.<\/li>\n<li>There is no excuse, you either accept what he has provided or you reject it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transformation Expectation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Live by faith.<\/li>\n<li>God has blessed you so that you can draw closer to him.<\/li>\n<li>God has blessed you so that you can be a blessing to others.<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s revelation is sufficient so trust him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke 16:19-31 Parallel Accounts No parallel accounts Context Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem.
