{"id":1507,"date":"2018-03-05T02:11:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T02:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1507"},"modified":"2018-03-27T00:45:59","modified_gmt":"2018-03-27T00:45:59","slug":"sermon-march-4-2018-the-christian-and-the-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-march-4-2018-the-christian-and-the-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon &#8211; March 4, 2018: &#8220;The Christian and the Law&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1507-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/mar4-18.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/mar4-18.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/mar4-18.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<h2>Luke 16:16-17<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parallel Accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Matthew 5:18 parallels Luke 16:17<\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luke uses the journey to Jerusalem to present different teachings of Jesus just as Matthew used the Sermon on the Mount.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Luke\u2019s reason for recording<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The idea may have been developed that Jesus was an abolitionist, but Jesus defeats such an idea.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Law and the Prophets<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both the Law and Prophets anticipated the coming Kingdom through the perfect son of God.<\/li>\n<li>John was the bridge between old and new covenants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How did Jesus come to fulfill the Law?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus did not come to abolish the Law.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus fulfilled the law in at least two ways.\n<ul>\n<li>He maintained a perfect state of righteousness and was never guilty of breaking the Law.<\/li>\n<li>Because of this he was able to satisfy the Laws requirement for a perfect substitutionary sacrifice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Should Christians adhere to the Law?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Law being spoken of was the law given to the nation of Israel as part of the covenant between the nation and God.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus makes it clear that the only type of \u201crighteousness\u201d that will allow one to enter into heaven has to exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 5:20)<\/li>\n<li>A new type of righteousness was made possible through the sacrifice of Jesus.<\/li>\n<li>This righteousness exceeds the righteousness of those who strictly adhere to the Law.<\/li>\n<li>This new righteousness does not depend upon works but upon faith.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, Christians are not required to adhere to the Law in order to earn salvation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Should Christians ignore the Law?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strictly speaking, the moral law is the universal law that applies to all men.<\/li>\n<li>This law should not be ignored.<\/li>\n<li>However, adhering to the moral law is now a result of salvation freely given.<\/li>\n<li>We adhere because we love God and we love our fellow man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transformation Expectation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God expects our righteousness to exceed that of the religious leaders of Jesus\u2019 day.<\/li>\n<li>God expects our righteousness to be the result of a grateful heart and not an attempt to earn anything.<\/li>\n<li>Our righteousness is a product of God\u2019s grace and mercy and not the product of anything we have done ourselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke 16:16-17 &nbsp; Parallel Accounts Matthew 5:18 parallels Luke 16:17 Context Luke uses the journey to Jerusalem to present different teachings of Jesus just as Matthew used the Sermon on the Mount.
