Luke has Jesus speaking in the company of Pharisees and scribes while Matthew has him speaking to his disciples and crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Luke\u2019s reason for recording<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luke is most likely using this occasion to illustrate the kind of \u201cdarkness\u201d the Pharisees keep the people in.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus may also be distancing himself from the Pharisees who seem to consider him their equal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Historical Background<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ceremonial hand washing was one of many traditions developed as attempts to include God in the mundane things of life.<\/li>\n<li>In the Law, ceremonial cleansing was only required of priests.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus objected to such traditions especially when they overshadowed the spirit of the Law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The darkness of the Pharisees (vv 39-40)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More emphasis was put on observing tradition and oral law than the Law itself.<\/li>\n<li>There was a failure to see that the true purpose of the Law was to shape the heart.<\/li>\n<li>Tradition and oral laws only dealt with outward appearance of obedience to the Law (as does legalism today).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How bad it had gotten for the Pharisees (vv 42-52)<\/p>\n<p>Woe can be expressed as \u201chow terrible it is!\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How terrible it is that you pay attention to the fine details of the Law but neglect the overall spirit of the Law.<\/li>\n<li>How terrible it is that you seek man\u2019s recognition over relationship with God.<\/li>\n<li>How terrible it is that you lead people unknowingly in to sin.<\/li>\n<li>How terrible it is that you burden people with regulations you don\u2019t even follow yourself.<\/li>\n<li>How terrible it is that you claim to honor those who spoke God\u2019s words but in reality don\u2019t do what he says through them.<\/li>\n<li>How terrible it is that you have the ability to help others in their relationship with God but you don\u2019t because you yourselves don\u2019t have a relationship with him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Warning<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This a warning to churches.<\/li>\n<li>This is a warning to pastors and church leaders.<\/li>\n<li>This is a warning to all Christians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>God wants your heart more than your actions because your heart dictates your actions.<\/p>\n<p>Implication of Jesus\u2019 words (v 41)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We should be more concerned about the condition of our hearts than making sure we don\u2019t do the \u201cdo nots.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>An overt concern for the \u201cdo nots\u201d eventually leads to legalism.<\/li>\n<li>If we do out of a pure heart we don\u2019t have to be concerned about transgressing the \u201cdo nots\u201d: we will end up naturally not doing them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Application<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is tempting to develop lists of \u201cdo nots\u201d and traditions.<\/li>\n<li>God is more concerned with the state of the heart than outward adherence to lists of dos and don\u2019ts.<\/li>\n<li>We shape our hearts by making what is important to God important to us.<\/li>\n<li>We need help to do this.<\/li>\n<li>We must be praying and asking God for his help in making the transformation of our hearts happen.<\/li>\n<li>We must be engaged in mind renewing activities which make transformation possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Transformation Expectation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stop thinking that only your actions matter.<\/li>\n<li>Stop trying to make people conform to your idea of what Christianity is.<\/li>\n<li>Make the prayer for God\u2019s help in transformation a daily priority.<\/li>\n<li>Make mind renewing activities a priority.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be concerned about what man sees, but be concerned about what God sees.<\/li>\n<li>Do those things which are truly important to God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke 11:37-54 Parallel Account Matthew 23:23-36 (kind of) Similar things are spoken but Luke\u2019s passage is most likely an earlier occasion than Matthew.
