{"id":1397,"date":"2017-11-12T19:36:09","date_gmt":"2017-11-12T19:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1397"},"modified":"2017-11-19T23:41:37","modified_gmt":"2017-11-19T23:41:37","slug":"sermon-november-12-2017-the-prime-necessity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-november-12-2017-the-prime-necessity\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon \u2013 November 12, 2017: \u201cThe Prime Necessity\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1397-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/nov12-17.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/nov12-17.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/nov12-17.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Luke 10:38-42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parallel Account<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No parallel account<\/p>\n<p>However, Martha and Mary are mentioned by John (chapters 11 &amp; 12).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lived in Bethany.<\/li>\n<li>Sisters to Lazarus.<\/li>\n<li>Mary is identified as one of the woman who anointed Jesus\u2019 feet (also Mark 14).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Luke\u2019s reason for recording<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These three stories focus on relationships moving from relationship with fellow man, relationship with Jesus to relationship with God.<\/li>\n<li>Luke stresses the inherent relationship between how one reacts to people and how one relates to God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For understanding\u2026background info<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hospitality<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taken very serious<\/li>\n<li>Guests were believed to be sent by God.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, seen as a sacred duty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why Martha was upset<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Martha felt obligated to fulfill her duty as host.<\/li>\n<li>Most likely saw Mary shirking her duty.\n<ul>\n<li>If she shared the home she should have shared in hosting responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li>Even if she did not share the home Mary had familial responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Jesus\u2019 response<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The use of the noun <em>meris <\/em>(portion, part and share) doesn\u2019t downplay what Martha\u2019s responsibilities but indicates that there are other responsibilities as well.<\/li>\n<li>The trick is determining what responsibilities are more important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Luke cues in<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luke uses the word <em>perispao <\/em>\u2013 distracted or pulled away from.<\/li>\n<li>Martha\u2019s felt obligation pulled her away from the prime necessity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The conflict between two \u201cnecessities\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Martha felt obligated to perform a cultural \u201cnecessity.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mary felt it was necessary to sit at Jesus\u2019 feet and learn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Lesson<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are many necessities in life, however, the prime necessity is a relationship with Jesus.<\/li>\n<li>If we don\u2019t see this as the prime necessity the other \u201cnecessities\u201d eventually become worthless.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that making a relationship with Jesus the prime necessity doesn\u2019t mean shirking other duties and responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li>Our relationship with Jesus has an impact on all of our other relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Transformation Expectation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you putting other necessities in front of your relationship with Jesus?<\/li>\n<li>God wants us to make our relationship with Jesus the priority.<\/li>\n<li>Make time to pray, study God\u2019s word, meditate on his word and serve God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke 10:38-42 Parallel Account No parallel account However, Martha and Mary are mentioned by John (chapters 11 &amp; 12).
