{"id":1333,"date":"2017-08-20T20:24:24","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T20:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1333"},"modified":"2017-09-13T00:27:55","modified_gmt":"2017-09-13T00:27:55","slug":"sermon-august-20-2017-obedient-belief-leads-to-faith-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-august-20-2017-obedient-belief-leads-to-faith-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon &#8211; August 20, 2017: &#8220;Obedient Belief Leads to Faith Exercise&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1333-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/aug20-17.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/aug20-17.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/aug20-17.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><em>Obedient Belief Leads to Faith Exercise<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Luke 8:22-25<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parallel accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Matthew 8:23-27<\/li>\n<li>Mark 4:35-41<\/li>\n<li>Luke 8:22-25<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where they seem to disagree<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Matthew seems to place the event earlier in Jesus\u2019s ministry.<\/li>\n<li>Luke is ambiguous as to the time of the event but records it in the same general area as Mark.<\/li>\n<li>Mark tells us the event happens in the evening on the day of Jesus\u2019s seaside teaching (Luke 8, Mark 3 &amp; 4 and Matthew 12 &amp; 13).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Purpose of Luke\u2019s Recording<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The next three stories in Luke serve to answer the question \u201cWho is this Jesus that he should be obeyed?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>This particular event parallels Psalm 107 where God\u2019s power to help his people in times of distress is revealed.<\/li>\n<li>This event provides the answer. \u201cJesus is God!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Basic Elements of the Story<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Jesus commands and the disciples obey.<\/li>\n<li>Disciples get into a precarious situation while obeying.<\/li>\n<li>Disciples respond negatively.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The Responses of the Disciples<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tempted to despair and believe all was lost (Luke).<\/li>\n<li>Tempted to accuse Jesus of not caring (Mark).<\/li>\n<li>Tempted to turn to Jesus out of fear (Matthew).<\/li>\n<li>We will be tempted the same ways!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Applying It to Ourselves<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus commands us and expects us to obey.<\/li>\n<li>When we obey we will get into precarious situations.<\/li>\n<li>The Enemy will be there using the situation to tempt us to respond wrongly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consequences of Such Responses<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despairing and believing all is lost can lead to dismal hopelessness.<\/li>\n<li>Blaming and accusing God of not caring can lead to life without joy and peace.<\/li>\n<li>Turning to God only in times of fear reveals fickleness and contributes to its continuation.<\/li>\n<li>Problem is, all of these, if unchecked, lead to a turning away from God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What We Can Learn<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus wants us to live by faith.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus wants us to constantly move in obedient belief despite precarious situations.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus wants to use such situations as exercises that lead to greater faith.<\/li>\n<li>The faithful eventually discover that the \u201cmarvel\u201d of God\u2019s working becomes \u201ccommon place.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Transformation Expectation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know God and live according to such knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>Stay aware of moments when the Enemy will tempt.<\/li>\n<li>Use every situation to build your faith instead of allowing it to contribute to its loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Obedient Belief Leads to Faith Exercise Luke 8:22-25 Parallel accounts Matthew 8:23-27 Mark 4:35-41 Luke 8:22-25 Where they seem to disagree Matthew seems to place the event earlier in Jesus\u2019s ministry.
