{"id":1321,"date":"2017-08-13T17:48:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-13T17:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1321"},"modified":"2017-08-20T20:25:01","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T20:25:01","slug":"sermon-august-13-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-august-13-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon &#8211; August 13, 2017: &#8220;God&#8217;s Family&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1321-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/aug13-17.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/aug13-17.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/aug13-17.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<h4>God\u2019s Family<br \/>\nLuke 8:19-21<\/h4>\n<p>Parallel accounts<br \/>\nMatthew 12:46-50<br \/>\nMark 3:31-35 (and possibly 3:20-21)<br \/>\nLuke 8:19-21 (and possibly 11:27-28)<\/p>\n<p>Where they agree<br \/>\n\u2022 Event is in proximity to the parables of the sower and lamp.<br \/>\n\u2022 The event seems to have taken place inside.<br \/>\n\u2022 The event most likely took place on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Where they seem to disagree<br \/>\n\u2022 Luke places the event after the parables and Matthew and Mark place it before.<br \/>\n\u2022 However, Greek de can be translated both then as well as also making what he says agree with Matthew and Mark that the events happened the same day.<br \/>\n\u2022 Matthew and Mark use the event to introduce the parables while Luke uses it to reinforce the parables.<\/p>\n<p>Side note: Answering the argument about contradictions<br \/>\n\u2022 How often do we tell stories remembering every single detail of what happened and what was said?<br \/>\n\u2022 The fact is even if they disagree in the details they almost always agree in the interpretation.<br \/>\n\u2022 The Gospels contain eye witness accounts of people who were constantly exposed to Jesus\u2019 ministry.<br \/>\n\u2022 The Gospel writers write within the boundaries of cultural expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get discouraged over disagreement of chronological order and exact wording. The Bible is amazingly unified especially in the interpretation and purpose of Jesus\u2019 teachings.<\/p>\n<p>Did Jesus\u2019 family think he was mad?<br \/>\n\u2022 Mark records an earlier event in 3:20-21 which many scholars thing give a reason for the visit of Jesus\u2019 family.<br \/>\n\u2022 However, there are some translating issues.<br \/>\n\u2013 Who is saying Jesus is mad?<br \/>\n\u2013 Oi par autou literally means \u201cthose beside him\u201d and not family.<br \/>\n\u2013 Some scholars believe the phrase is an idiom and therefore refer to the later event to identify who the idiom refers to.<\/p>\n<p>Pastor Brian\u2019s opinion<br \/>\nThere is little proof oi par autou is an idiom.<br \/>\nIt most likely refers to his disciples and should just be translated \u201cthose beside him.\u201d<br \/>\nIt was most likely others saying Jesus was out of his mind (evidenced by the fact Mark records that scribes and Pharisees were calling him demon possessed).<\/p>\n<p>Why was the event recorded?<br \/>\n\u2022 All three writers use it to either introduce or reinforce the concept that faith is obedient belief.<br \/>\n\u2022 It introduces a very important concept: people can be a part of God\u2019s family.<br \/>\n\u201cBut to all who receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.\u201d \u2013 John 1:12<\/p>\n<p>What characterizes God\u2019s family<br \/>\n\u2022 People who hear the word of God and do it.<br \/>\n\u2022 The son of God said\u2026<br \/>\n\u201cI can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge\u2026because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.\u201d \u2013 John 5:30<br \/>\n\u201cTruly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.\u201d \u2013 John 5:19<br \/>\n\u201cI do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me\u2026I always do the things that are pleasing to him.\u201d \u2013 John 8:28-29<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObedience is the key to being part of God\u2019s family. Knowledge is not enough\u2014the religious leaders had that and still missed Jesus. Following is not enough\u2014the crowd did that but still didn\u2019t understand who Jesus was. Those who believe are brought into a family. In these words, Jesus was explaining that in his spiritual family, relationship are ultimately more important and longer-lasting than those formed in one\u2019s physical family.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211; Life Application New Testament Commentary<\/p>\n<p>The Transformation Expectation<br \/>\nTwo implications<br \/>\nListen to God\u2019s word and do what it says.<br \/>\n\u201cTherefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.\u201d \u2013 Ephesians 5:1<br \/>\n2.
