{"id":1308,"date":"2017-07-30T23:22:01","date_gmt":"2017-07-30T23:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/?p=1308"},"modified":"2017-08-13T17:55:10","modified_gmt":"2017-08-13T17:55:10","slug":"sermon-july-30-2017-the-right-attitude-needed-for-transformation-pt-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermon-july-30-2017-the-right-attitude-needed-for-transformation-pt-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon &#8211; July 30, 2017: &#8220;The Right Attitude Needed for Transformation, Pt. 2&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1308-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/jul30-17.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/jul30-17.mp3\">http:\/\/kcc.life\/life\/sermons\/jul30-17.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<h4>Luke 7:38-8:3<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Gospel stories: Anointing of Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Matthew 26:6-13<\/li>\n<li>Mark 14:3-9<\/li>\n<li>Luke 7:36-50<\/li>\n<li>John 12:1-8<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Where Matthew, Mark and John agree<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just before the Passover\/crucifixion.<\/li>\n<li>Home in Bethany (1\/2 mi from Jerusalem).<\/li>\n<li>The perfume used was expensive.<\/li>\n<li>Woman criticized for poor use of perfume by disciples.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus used the event to speak of his upcoming death and burial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Most likely the same event.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Where Luke differs<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronological placement has the event most likely in Galilee.<\/li>\n<li>Event took place at the home of a Pharisee.<\/li>\n<li>No mention is made of cost or waste of the ointment (perfume)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus is criticized for allowing the \u201csinful\u201d woman to anoint him.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus uses the event to teach about forgiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Most likely a different event.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Purpose of the passages<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Transition from proving Jesus is Messiah to showing Jesus fulfilling purpose of his ministry (i.e. forgiveness of sin).<\/li>\n<li>By telling stories with women Luke reinforces idea that salvation offered by Jesus is for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>This story serves to illustrate the contrast between how the common people and the Pharisees received Jesus.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Exegete<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It was customary (not obligatory) to show respect to an honored guest by washing their feet, greeting with a kiss and providing oil for the head.<\/li>\n<li>Obviously Simon did not have a great deal of respect for Jesus.<\/li>\n<li>These types of dinners with a public figure were considered public events.<\/li>\n<li>Reclining at the table was expected at these types of public dinners as they took longer than normal meals.<\/li>\n<li>The designation of sinner was used of anyone who did not adhere to the oral laws.<\/li>\n<li>The alabaster flask with ointment was most likely a dowry to be used for marriage.<\/li>\n<li>No real precedence for what the woman did, but it was obvious she did it out of a contrite and grateful heart.<\/li>\n<li>Simon clearly does not believe Jesus is a prophet because Jesus allows this \u201csinful\u201d woman to do this for him.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus uses the event as a teachable moment concerning forgiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Clearly the women of chapter 8 had similar transformative experiences causing them to give.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Developing the right love attitude for transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have been created with the tendency to love when we are shown love.<\/li>\n<li>We have the tendency to return love that is equal to or greater than the love we have received.<\/li>\n<li>True love is shown is always evidenced by giving action.<\/li>\n<li>God evidenced his love through the giving of his Son Jesus.<\/li>\n<li>What valuable thing do you have to give in return for the love God has given you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The transformation expectation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Give your life to him in return for what he has given you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give him your trust.<\/li>\n<li>Give him your devotion.<\/li>\n<li>Give him your mind.<\/li>\n<li>Give him your obedience.<\/li>\n<li>Give him your service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke 7:38-8:3 Gospel stories: Anointing of Jesus Matthew 26:6-13 Mark 14:3-9 Luke 7:36-50 John 12:1-8 Where Matthew, Mark and John agree Just before the Passover\/crucifixion.
