Genesis – “Participating In & Responding to God’s Covenant”

Genesis 8:20 – 9:28

Noah’s Response to God’s Provision – Genesis 8:20-22 (ESV)

The New World – Genesis 9:1-28 (ESV)

Noteworthy

  • There are several parallels between the account of Noah and Creation.
  • There are parallels between Noah’s altar and Moses’ altar.
  • These parallels support the fact that Pentateuch is from one source and written for a specific audience.

Covenants

  • More than agreements but the giving of oneself to another.
  • Can be one or two-sided.
  • Can be conditional or unconditional.
  • Most of God’s covenants are one-sided and unconditional.

Major Covenants in Scripture

  • Edenic – Two-sided conditional. God promises blessings as long as man does not sin.
  • Adamic – One-sided unconditional. God promises that the son of woman will crush the serpent’s head in the future (fulfilled by Jesus).
  • Noahic
    • One is two-sided conditional. God will save Noah and family through obedience.
    • One is one-sided unconditional. God will never destroy life on earth again in the same manner he had just done so.
  • Abrahamic – Begins as a two-sided conditional but ends up a one-sided unconditional. God promises land, nation and blessing of the entire earth through Abraham’s descendents.
  • Mosaic – Two-sided conditional. Israel will continue to experience God’s blessing through obedience.
  • Palestinian – One-sided unconditional. God will restore Israel to its land and promises an eventual change of heart.
  • Davidic – One-sided unconditional. David will always have a descendent on his throne.
  • Solomic – One-sided unconditional. Solomon’s descendent Coniah will never have a descendent on the throne.
  • New Covenant – One-sided unconditional. God promises salvation to Israel but clearly offered to all the earth.

Because of his love God is seen constantly initiated covenant with his creation.

Proper response to participating in God’s covenant

  • John 3:16 – God’s unconditional covenant – the promise of salvation to all.
  • Noah sets the example of the proper response – worship.

What is the worship God expects? – Romans 12:1-21

  • “living sacrifice” – Our lived out lives!
  • “conform to this world” – We are already conformed!
  • “be transformed” – Become unconformed!
  • “testing you may discern…” – Put into action what you feel you have learned!
  •  “Let love be genuine…” – Spiritual act of worship.

When we worship God responds!

So What?

  • Christians – respond to God’s covenant through life-worship of love.
  • Non-Christians – respond to God’s unconditional covenant of salvation by receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior.
