Sermon – June 25, 2017: “Confront Sin”

The Commands of Jesus

Confront Sin

Matthew 18:15-20

It’s all about the love

  • Jesus expects us to love one another as he has loved us. (John 13:34)
  • Jesus expects us to give and do what is best and right for each other.
  • Truly loving one another means that we do not let each other’s sin go unchecked.

Love through confronting sin

  • Our first priority is making every effort to not live in sin ourselves.
  • We all need help though, and one way we can help one another is by obeying the command to confront each other’s sin when it is perceived.
  • We always need to approach confrontation with the first priority being the discovery of why sin is taking place.
  • With such knowledge, we need to act accordingly: either teach, correct or rebuke.
  • The goal of such confrontation is repentance and continued involvement in the family of God.
  • Those who have undergone church discipline cannot be accepted or expected to act as a member of God’s family.
  • The goal for those who have undergone church discipline is to see them submit to the lordship of Jesus.

Transformation Expectation

  • Jesus expects us to love fully and completely even when we perceive such giving as a conflict of interest to our own wants and desires.
  • Jesus expects us to love especially when it is tough to do so.
